Random Acts of Kindness Club

By Anika Hukmani

My name is Anika Hukmani and I am a current Junior at Winston Churchill High School. A year ago, I created a Random Acts of Kindness Club at my school to build the self esteem of the students and staff members at Winston Churchill and to raise school morale. I believe that kindness is extremely important and improves our quality of life in every aspect.

Why did I start this club?

Growing up we were taught to hold the door open for someone, to say please and thank you, and to compliment someone. These are small acts of kindness that can make someone's day. Many of us don’t realize the impact these small actions have on others. I started this club to help spread kindness and show others that even the smallest, kindest, actions make a world of a difference.

What is a random act of kindness?

A random act of kindness is an act performed by a person to another person (or a group to another group) in order to help someone feel better without expecting anything in return. Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give!

What do we do in the Random Acts of Kindness Club?

The Random Acts of Kindness Club holds meetings once a month. At each meeting, we introduce two new activities to complete for that month. One is a kindness activity that brings the community together and the other is an optional service learning activity. At the end of each meeting, the officers and I play a daily dose of kindness video to boost everyone’s positivity for the rest of the day.

Emel Zuberi is a Junior at Winston Churchill High School. She has been a fellow member of the Random Acts of Kindness Club since it started. Recently, I asked her some questions regarding the Random Acts of Kindness Club:

What’s one thing you learned in the Random Acts of Kindness Club?

One thing that I learned in the Random Acts of Kindness Club is that you never really know the struggles people are going through. I learned that a kind gesture for another person, will not only brighten their day but they will most likely pass on the gesture to another person and it may grow from there. After being a part of this club, being there for others and expressing kindness has become a really important part of my life.

Has it helped you incorporate kindness into your daily life?

Yes, it has helped me incorporate kindness into my daily life! Everyday, I always try to be positive in every single situation and try to be kind to everyone that I meet.
